    Dave,

What is your scaled score overall?  Is this your first attempt, how have your other divisions gone?

Many candidates incorrectly think that you have to pass each content Area to pass each division - all you have to do is meet the minimum total number of questions correct.  This often leads to candidates under-valuing the work it takes to maintain the level of knowledge they've already demonstrated, instead over-focusing on specific topics they remember from their attempt that may or may not appear on a retake.

If you dont study what they tell you that you are low on, how would you break the cycle of failing. You would just answer the questions you did the previous time.

    Hi Dave,

It takes effort - more than most candidates realize - just to maintain the level of knowledge necessary to get the same number of questions correct.  If your scaled score is at or over 500, you're in the statistical "passing range" that half of all exams score within - 50% of exam divisions taken score within 4 questions either side of the cut score question.  If you're in that passing range, it's often much easier to get enough additional questions correct to pass by improving your knowledge a little in a couple of content areas you're already fairly competent at, rather than trying to make all of your improvement in the content area you have the lowest score in.  If your score is below 495 or so, then you likely need more in-depth improvement, or there's something about how you're approaching the exam that needs adjustment.

I got a "provisional pass" today! I have been on and off with the Amber Book. This was my first try on CE. Failed before PcM, PjM, and PA years ago. Now going for those again only using the Amber Book.

    Hey Dave,

My approach would be to make practice questions the main part of studying and use the books to work through whatever i’m missing. Do a small set, review every wrong answer. If any topics where not clear to me i made a separate section in my notebook and would review those more frequently when i got time during the week.

For team/resource management, i’d focus on AHPP 15th edition sections 10.2 Project Teams and 10.3 Project Budgets, Work Planning, and Monitoring for staffing, allocating hours and keeping the work within budget. For CE, review 10.8 Bidding and Negotiation, 10.9 Construction Phase Services and 10.10 Project Completion and Post-Construction. In Ballast, focus on the CE sections covering preconstruction activities, construction administration and project closeout. For Ching’s Building Construction Illustrated, start with Chapter 3 Foundation Systems and Chapter 7 Moisture & Thermal Protection, especially the footing, drainage, waterproofing and flashing details. Chapters 5 Wall Systems and 6 Roof Systems can help you understand the assemblies you’re looking at.

As i said, practice exams workedthe best for me. Can start with NCARB’s free practice exam.
