Egress widths

Hi

Could someone help me understand when to use 0.15 factor when calculating egress widths?

I know that 0.2 is for corridors & doors and 0.3 for stairs...but 0.15?

  Read exceptions in chapter 10, section 1005 for stairs, doors and corridors.
  0.3 for stairs changes to 0.2 if building is equipped with automatic sprinkler system.
  0.2 for doors/ corridors changes to .15 for the same reason.

  I suggest reading the entire ch 10 of IBC.  Be sure to read the 'vanilla' version, and not a state modified one.

  The various widths depend on factors like sprinklered or not.  Low occupancy (under 50) can be 36" width even.   There are lots of exceptions.  The standard minimum width with sprinklers is 44" CLEAR.

  I second Rebekka's comment - take a good read of Chapter 10 of the IBC - specifically the EGRESS portion of the building code.   The best way to know what you are going after is to read the source material in its entirety. 

  That said, that will not help you understand the answer.  The way to actually understand how to solve for your question - when to know when that factor is used - is to try some problems.  Figure some things out for yourself.  Work backwards from where you find the 0.15 and see when and why it applies in a figurative example. 

  Then come back onto this post here - and please do your best to explain to all of us when that is the factor you use and why.  Teaching is a great way to really learn the subject.
