Non-proprietary Specifications

If we have non-proprietary specifications, what should we request from the subcontractors?

Do we need to ask for their resume/ key personnel? or should we ask for them to provide bond insurances? basically what is the first step after we know the sub for the specified material?

Also, what is the first step to do after we hire consultants? should we ask them to provide insurance?

  The general contractor deal with selecting the subs and checking their credentials, insurance, etc.

  And yes, when hiring consultants, i'd check references, their professional liability insurance, etc.  Having the proper insurance coverage is very important.
