toe nail or face nail stronger ? what is NCARB's answer ?
So... I am finding different information in different study books again.
Which one is stronger for Toe nail, Face nailed, End nailed connection?

Face nail is strongest, then toe nail close behind, then end nail a distant third. I included a video I made on the subject from Amber Book here. I'll leave it up live for 72 hours.

I think what Mike is saying is correct - the face nailed is clearly strongest, but it only works is one direction. To resist lateral loads, I think the toe-nailed joint would be best. Face nails pop up sometimes with lateral movement. Maybe that's why the sources don't all agree...

Agree with Mike and Rebekka - another way to remember face nails being stronger is to think about joist hangars. Why are they used instead of end or toe nailing? because they allow face nails through each member, which creates a stronger connection.
However, if we're talking about framing a stud wall, not a floor, face nailing isn't an option. In this instance, a toenail resists both lateral and pullout forces better than an end nail, and is therefore preferred. End nailing is easier to do for tilt-up wall construction, and often contractors will end nail first, then toenail once the wall is erected.
