Finally Passed PPD!!! — What’s Actually Worth Studying (and What’s Not)
I finally passed PPD!!! I went through more than one round of studying and tried quite a few different resources along the way. Looking back, I think the easiest trap with PPD is the size of the exam. There is so much material that it is very easy to feel like you need to study everything. What helped me most was figuring out what each resource was actually useful for.
My study approach eventually became: Build the basic framework → Do practice questions and expose weak areas → Go back and study those weak areas → Practice again.
- PPD is really about design judgment
At first, I studied HVAC, Structure, Site, Code, Materials, and Cost almost like separate subjects. The more questions I practiced, the more I realized that PPD rarely keeps them separate. A question may give you a building type, climate, system requirement, and budget limitation all at once, and then ask you to choose the most reasonable option.
For me, the key was not just understanding each topic, but learning how to apply it to a specific scenario. That shift made a big difference.
- What was worth studying — and what I would skip
Here is how I would rank the resources based on how useful they were for my own PPD prep:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amber Book
If you are just starting PPD, I think Amber is one of the best places to begin. Its biggest value is helping you build a systems-based framework. It connects the different building systems and gives you a good overall picture before you start getting lost in details. My suggestion would be to use Amber for your first pass and focus on the big picture.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Architect’s Studio Companion
This book was especially useful for understanding when different building systems and structural systems make sense. That is very close to the way PPD asks questions. You may need to decide which system makes the most sense for a certain building type, span, program, or space limitation. I used this book mainly for system comparison and system selection. If you already have the basics down, I think it is more useful than reading another general review book.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Karin’s PPD-PDD Summary Sheets
I found these most useful near the end of my studying. They are compact and good for quickly reviewing high-frequency or easy-to-mix-up topics before the exam. I would not use them as my main learning source, but they were very helpful for a final condensed review.
⭐⭐⭐ FEMA 454 — Chapter 4 & 5
I think Chapters 4 and 5 are worth reading for seismic concepts. Seismic questions are not a huge part of PPD, but they do come up, and this is one area where understanding building behavior is much more useful than memorizing terms. I treated FEMA 454 as a focused seismic supplement, not something to read cover to cover.
⭐⭐⭐ Historic Preservation
Historic Preservation is not a huge part of the exam either, but I still think it is worth reviewing. The main thing is to understand the difference between preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction, and when each one would be appropriate for a historic building scenario. Once you understand those basic distinctions, these questions can be relatively straightforward.
⭐⭐ Heating, Cooling, Lighting
This is a good book, but it is also a lot of reading. If lighting, thermal comfort, or heating and cooling concepts are weak areas for you, it can be a useful reference. But for the amount of time it takes, I didn’t find the payoff for PPD to be that high, I would not put it near the top of the list, especially if your exam is coming up soon.
⭐ Building Construction Illustrated
If you are not very familiar with construction details, wall assemblies, or roof assemblies, this is a good visual resource for building a basic understanding. But based on my personal exam experience, the connection to PPD was not as direct as I expected. If you already work with construction details in your day-to-day job, I would just skim the areas you are less familiar with.
❌ Building Code Illustrated — I would skip it
I personally do not think you need to spend dedicated study time on this book for PPD. Code-related questions always provide the reference material you need during the exam. The more important skill is using the search function to find the relevant information quickly and apply it correctly. I feel the same way about ADA-related questions. You do not need to memorize the code.
❌ MEEB — I would skip it
MEEB has a huge amount of information and goes much deeper than PPD needs. It is a valuable professional reference, but if your goal is to pass PPD, I do not think the time investment pays off. It is very easy to spend hours on mechanical or electrical engineering details that the exam simply does not expect you to know at that depth.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ NCARB Official Practice Exam
For practice questions, this was the most useful resource for me. The question style and difficulty felt the closest to the actual exam. I would not use it just to see whether you pass or fail. The real value is going back through every question and making sure you understand why the correct answer is correct and why the other choices are not.
- Practice and reviewing mistakes mattered more than reading more books
Once I had gone through the main study resources, practice questions became much more valuable than continuing to add more reading.
At first, after a practice exam, the first thing I looked at was my score: 70%? 75%? 80%? Eventually I realized that the overall percentage did not tell me where my real problems were.
I started writing down the questions I missed and redoing them a few days later. For me, understanding the explanation was not the same as actually knowing the material. If I could come back a few days later, answer the question correctly on my own, and explain why the other options were wrong, then I felt like I actually knew it.
- At the end, the goal changed from learning more to applying what I knew
My study loop became pretty simple: Practice → Review → Identify Weak Areas → Study Those Areas → Practice Again.
Early on, most of my time was spent learning. Later on, I cared much more about whether I could actually apply what I had learned.
Also, for anyone working full time like I was, short practice sessions can be surprisingly useful. You do not always need enough time for a full mock exam. Sometimes I only had 10–20 minutes, so I would do a small set of questions and review them right away. That kind of short practice + targeted review was easier for me to keep up with every day, and it worked well for focusing on one weak area at a time.
PPD covers a lot, and during the process it is very easy to feel like there is still an endless amount you have not studied. But you really do not need to read every resource or master every topic at the deepest level. Keep practicing, review your mistakes, and go back to the areas that keep giving you trouble. Over time, the way NCARB asks questions starts to make a lot more sense.
If you are studying for PPD right now, do not let the size of the exam scare you. Take it one piece at a time, focus on the important stuff, and keep working on the areas that are not quite there yet. You don’t need to know everything — you just need to be solid enough on the things that matter. Good luck — you’ve got this!

fritzcarpenter I gave myself about two months to study for PPD, so I went ahead and scheduled the exam two months out. For me, having the exam date already on the calendar made a big difference — it gave me a real deadline and definitely made me take studying more seriously. I felt like two months was plenty of time to get through all the PPD material and still leave some time for review. I did fail my first attempt, but I still think two months is more than enough time to cover the content for PPD！

I used a mix of practice questions from Amber Book, AREQuestions, AREchitect, and the official NCARB practice exam. Toward the end of my studying, I honestly found practice questions way more useful than just continuing to read through more material. They helped me see what I actually understood, what I was still weak on, and how the concepts were likely to show up on the exam.
Amber Book’s questions were useful, but I thought they were generally a little easier. AREQuestions was convenient on a computer, and AREchitect was really nice for doing questions on my phone whenever I had a few spare minutes.
The official NCARB practice exam was definitely the most valuable for me. The difficulty and question style felt the closest to the real exam, so I’d highly recommend going through it more than once and really understanding why each answer is right or wrong.
