PDD failed for the 3rd time and I honestly don't know where to go from here
Hey everyone,
With my 3rd PDD fail this past week, I am at the point where I don’t know what else to do with PDD, so I’m hoping to hear from people who have been in a similar situation. I’ve passed the other 5 ARE divisions, but I just cannot seem to get PDD.
My most recent attempt was last week and it was a virtual exam at home. About 2.5 hours into it, we had a power outage. I had to reconnect, go through the security checks again, get a new proctor, etc. and then continue the exam. Needless to say, that was pretty rough. Even aside from the power outage, I’m really struggling with this exam. Every time I take PDD, I feel like I’m getting a completely different exam. There are so many questions where I’m sitting there thinking, “Where did this even come from?” I keep seeing things I’ve never encountered in my study materials or practice exams. The amount of information and detail to learn for this exam has finally overwhelmed me and I am very close to giving up.
I have studied with Amber Book, Hyperfine, my own notes from YouTube videos, multiple other study materials, and lots of practice questions and exams. I got 80/100 on the NCARB practice exam a day before, so I really thought I was ready this time. I also got 74% on an Amber Book practice exam. And then I failed again.
For reference, here are my score reports:
TEST 1: 10/09/2025
TEST 2: 12/18/2025
TEST 3: 08/03/2026
At this point, I’m honestly exhausted. This exam has taken so much time, money, and energy, and after three attempts I’m starting to wonder if I should just let it go. For anyone who has failed PDD multiple times and eventually passed: what did you actually change?
I am way too mentally and physically exhausted to "just do more". I’ve already put so much into studying for this exam, and I don’t know if going back and spending another few months doing the same thing is really going to change the outcome.
I’m pretty close to letting go of becoming an architect altogether, which is really hard to say after making it through 5/6 exams. So any advice, motivation, or resources would be very valuable and genuinely appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Hey there Anonymous123
Judging by your percentages... I feel like you aren't far! I'd really like to know what your scaled scores are. those provide a far more accurate picture of how close you are to passing. just know, that if you are around the 525 range, you only missed it by 1-2 questions.
I have found Elif's ARE questions of invaluable help. Ive passed 4/6 with PPD and PDD remaining and plan to use her questions and videos.
Amber book is a great resource to strengthen your concepts.
Elif's questions hones and fine tunes them by making you read and scrutinize every question. This is especially important when you are so close to passing. Her questions will give you the edge because some of them are just hard. You will have the same reaction " where the hell did this come from?!" But trust me... it's the only reason I passed PCM and PA on my third try after getting super close using Amber book. Amber book will get you there, Elif will push you over the edge. She builds the good kind of paranoia and makes you hyper aware of each word.
Hope this helps and wish you the best of luck! :) You didn't come this far, just to come this far!
Edit: Plugged in your scores into AmberBook's Calculator. Man, that stings.. but you can do it !!!!

I’m really sorry...you’ve clearly put in a lot of work, and having a power outage in the middle of the exam only added to an already stressful experience. Since you’ve passed the other five divisions, you’ve already proven you can do this!
At this point, it may be less about studying more and more about identifying the specific PDD areas that are consistently giving you trouble. Try using your score reports to find patterns, then focus your next round of studying on understanding the concepts and how to apply them rather than trying to cover every possible detail. PDD is broad, and you’re never going to feel like you know everything that could appear.
Give yourself some time to reset before deciding what’s next. You’re one division away - don’t let this attempt convince you that the progress you’ve already made doesn’t count!
Good luck!

Cheer up, don't give up. If this is any encouragement, I passed PA on my 6th attempt in a 3-year span. My score reports were wilder and, in a couple, occasions I did waaay worse in some areas AFTER studying, which was obviously confusing, frustrating, and disappointing. In some exams I also got the most bizarre Where did this even come from?!?! questions.
Take a breath, keep studying. At the end I feel I learned a lot more, and it stuck, from all the studying. I also knew most of the information and did well on practice exams, but, for many reasons (including strange questions throwing me off, then rushing, + exam anxiety etc, etc...) I wasn't able to synthesize all of what I knew to get enough right answers, until I did. Like other people in this thread have said, there are many great resources but don't overwhelm yourself. Pick one. There's a few on time management and reading through the question (identifying key words, unnecessary information and distractors).
I personally noticed that I would keep thinking about those weird questions that I had flagged and return to them several times to change my guess. One great think I started doing was taking a lot of short hydration/snack break (fuel for the brain!) after an x number of questions worked for me. Since they lock, I'd be able to "let go" of those weird questions. Don't "let go" the exams just yet! Think about rescheduling your retake as soon as you're allowed so you don't forget all you know and you don't feel overwhelmed by the idea of months studying. Good luck!

Thank you so much for this!! I really appreciate the encouragement. ❤️ I haven’t tried Elif’s questions yet, so I’m definitely going to look into that. And thank you for pointing out the scaled score. I honestly haven't paid much attention to that in the past, but just saw today that I got a 525! Thanks for placing my numbers in. Falling short by 1 question feels awful though!! 😭
Also, the “you didn’t come this far just to come this far” definitely hit. 😂 I think I’m just really discouraged because I have been close for a while, but I can’t seem to get over that last hurdle.

Thank you so much, Kiara! ❤️ I really appreciate this. I think you’re right that I need to step back, look at the patterns in my reports, and focus on application rather than trying to learn everything. I’m definitely going to give myself some time to reset before deciding what’s next.

Thank you so much for sharing this! Passing PA on your 6th attempt gives me some hope and makes me feel like I'm not alone.❤️ I can relate so much to the weird questions throwing me off and then second-guessing myself. I think I definitely need to work on that part of the exam since I am tempted to go back and change answers. I have observed in practice exams that I've regretted going back and changing answers more often than not. Really appreciate the advice!
