Can Someone tell me what "dt" is in this formula?

  I think...dt = depth of beam x thickness of the beam.

  Agreed. The reference equations should employ standard nomenclature for clarity.

  According to Equation G2-1 of the ANSI/AISC 360-16;

  Vn = 0.6F_yA_wC_v1, C_v1 is 1.0 for rolled W-shaped

  This mean that the equation should indicate the “t” as t_w = Web thickness. And d is the depth of the beam.

  (Shear Stress) v = V (Shear Force) / dt_w

  This applies to flexure shear only. Torsional shear is looked at differently.

  In v = V/A, A is the area for rectangular beams. For W beams, use v= V/dt instead of A. Where d= depth of beam and t= thickness of web. In other words, for a W beam, only the web counts in this equation.
