Does anyone have an answer for the best shading device for North facing windows?  

On the South, it is best to use a horizontal overhang and on the east and west, vertical louvers; but I have found conflicting info for the North elevation (especially when we are not given any information on where the project is located).  

Any thoughts or references would. be greatly appreciated!

  I believe this is a highly debated topic, but Heating, Cooling, Lighting has resources on this.  HCL recommends vertical fins for North facing windows.  It restricts views if used on the East or West sides.

  Thank you Katie.  I was just looking this up.  Am finding conflict information as well with different sources specifying different solutions but will read through this reference now.  Thanks for taking the time.

  Hi Mrs. Penebad,

  I have read to use clerestory windows lighting is good practice but then again that's not really a shading device but more of a method of light penetration/ fenestrations.
