Brick - Soldier Course / Rowlock - BCI

I was reading through Building Construction Illustrated by Francis DK Ching (5th ed),and noticed that the information for the Soldier Course & Rowlock on 5.26 Masonrry Building are conflicting.

Should it be the Soldier Course points to the one laid vertically with longer edge exposed. and the Rowlock points to the one laid horizontally with the shorter edge exposed?

  That diagram is in fact incorrectly labeled.  You are 100% correct - soldier is standing up, rowlock is laying down.  Surprised they missed that in that book......

  Thank you David, I was wondering the same, I thought that I've been calling those brick wrong the whole time.

  Good catch! I didn’t even notice that when I studied this book, I just knew from experience “soldier” stands at attention. Easy way to remember it...of course it doesn’t help when the study materials have mistakes in them.

  This book is wrong. I solved a question wrong on the amber book PDD test yesterday because of this. So I researched more and the soldier brick is definitely the vertical standing one. It shows in other books, the amber book and google. That’s a bit of a concern since this is one of the NCARB reference books.
