NCARB PRACTICE EXAM QUESTION - MASTER FORMAT RELATED
A project team is completing the design for a fast-track renovation project while demolition is underway. The new design calls for non-insulated metal stud furring along the perimeter of the existing insulated masonry wall. During demolition, though, the construction manager discovers that the walls are missing the insulation indicated in the documents for the existing building.
The architect and construction manager determine that foamed-in insulation to the full depth of the stud cavity will provide the desired R-value for the exterior wall system.
Which bid packages should be released in conjunction with the insulation bid package?
| A. | 07 62 00 - Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim & 07 92 00 - Joint Sealants |
| B. | 20 07 19 - Piping Insulation & 23 07 13 - Duct Insulation |
| C. | 09 21 16 - Gypsum Board Assemblies & 09 91 23 - Interior Painting |
| D. | 26 05 34 - Conduit for Electrical Systems & 26 05 37 - Electrical Boxes |
CORRECT RESPONSE
26 05 34 - Conduit for Electrical Systems & 26 05 37 - Electrical Boxes
Conduit and electrical boxes will be run in the framed walls and should be installed prior to the insulation so that insulation will not need to be cut out and replaced for electrical rough-in.
My thinking is simple and straight forward in that the Interior Painting should be released in conjunction with the insulation bid package to construct and complete the wall assembly.
Could someone provide a more detailed explanation, please and thank you.

Process of elimination works best here. The main point is that the options are released in conjunction with the wall insulation bid package, meaning the work will be completed congruently.
Option A refers to flashing and sealants, which wouldn't apply for interior stud furring. Option C would be after the insulation, interior cavity routing, and stud installation is complete. Option B is separate insulation treatment for applications that aren't related to the insulated wall assembly.
Option D is correct due to the sequence of construction and assembly, as the answer explains.

Hi Henry,
Fast-tracked doesn't really matter here - the keys are typical construction sequence things, and what goes where basically - as JCorrington and abruno said. C. specifically is the spec for Interior Painting - it comes well after insulation would, and so doesn't need to be released with the insulation bid package. Starting with that the wall was supposed to be insulated but isn't, so insulation is being added in the stud bays that are being added as furring against the block wall. I can't really come up with a scenario where interior painting would need to be released congruently with insulation work.
You're looking for something that should really happen before the insulation is installed.
In normative construction, wiring and electrical boxes are run within the wall - where there is block with furring, it's run in the depth of the furring.
The other further hint that it is the electrical boxes is the type of insulation - spray foam is much more difficult to modify after the fact - in almost all cases you want to install insulation after electrical and plumbing work - really anything being run in the walls - is complete.
Happy studying!
