An Expert Process for Answering ARE Questions
Thursday's 1/25 free 6pm ET Zoom study session is titled, “An Expert Process for Answering ARE Questions.” Preview the question we’ll be covering below.

An architect is evaluating a proposed site for a new elementary school. Upon visiting the site, the architect observes the following: Significant erosion patterns on the adjacent property, which is at a much higher-grade elevation. Large amounts of sediment and soil deposits dispersed throughout the property. Signs of natural vegetation debris collected in piles throughout the site. Based on these specific discoveries, which resources should the architect refer to before making a recommendation to the owner? Check the three that apply.
- United States Geological Survey (USGS) maps
- Zoning maps applicable to the site
- Topographic survey of the proposed site
- Geotechnical investigation reports
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) maps
- United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) land surveys
-
The answer can be found in the demonstration exam, which I’ve copied here:
United States Geological Survey (USGS) maps
The USGS provides reliable topographic information for adjacent properties that are not included in the site survey.Topographic survey of the proposed site
A topographic survey is essential for informing the site design, particularly for understanding potential grade changes or drainage patterns.Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) maps
FEMA maps can provide information on potential flood risks and drainage concerns, which may be reflected by sediment or debris deposits observed on the site.Regarding option D, the question specifies “before making a recommendation to the owner.” My guess is even if debris piles have already been collected on site, further geotechnical investigation represents a recommended action rather than a reference resource that can be consulted prior to making the recommendation. There are some "word game" in the ARE like this.
