Building Codes Illustrated (by Ching) 2021?
Most of us are well aware that Building Codes Illustrated is one of the most prolific exam references for the ARE. The IBC 2018, 6th edition is specified in the Handbook. I just found out that there is going to be a new edition of the book coming out this August, and it deals directly with the 2021 IBC.
Should we opt for this new edition? Will there be many differences? Is NCARB going to switch to it when formulating exam questions? Any background info? Thank you.

Steven,
The ARE is based on the 2018 IBC. Typically, the exam is one edition behind the latest ICC codes. We have no plans to move the exam to the 2021 codes until 2023/2024 when the 2024 ICC codes are released. When this update does occur, we will communicate the change to all testers.

That message from NCARB there about sums it up.
2018 codes are the current ARE reference. In addition, NCARB provides the necessary code snippets on the exam that you should be basing your answers on. So even if you studied 2027 or 1952 building code (obviously neither of these are real things) - you still answer BASED ON THE PROVIDED REFERENCE.
Important for people to understand that.
