NCARB Practice Exam Question 2 - where to add elevator?
Hiya! Regarding this question below - the correct answer is B, but wouldn't this option reduce the width of egress and therefore not appropriate?

The ADA requires 3'-0" minimum hallway widths, though it can be reduced to 2'-8" for a length of 24". Hallways do need to have a passing space of 5'-0" at least every 200 feet so that two wheelchairs can pass each other.
Option B may not be ideal, but it does meet the code. It leaves enough space to meet the 3'-0" minimum clearance width.
The problem with option A is that the elevator is accessed at the stair landing. You have to go up the stairs to reach the elevator, which defeats the purpose of an elevator.
The problem with option C is that it opens directly into a private residence, so it isn't accessible to most other users.
