Downspouts study session
Thursday’s 6pm ET Zoom study session is titled, “Downspouts” You’ll take the first five minutes of class to answer the question alone, but if you would like to get a head-start on that, here is the assignment.
An architect who designed a 16,400 SF one-story biology research facility’s warehouse receives an RFI because the contractor is unclear how many 3-inch downspouts there should be in the building. The specs suggest one number of downspouts and the drawing elevations suggest another. The architect, who can’t find the original downspout calculations in her notes, needs to recalculate based on the local 100-year hourly rainfall rate of 2.75 inches/hour. Assume that the gutter system will be configured so that an equal portion of the roof drains through each vertical downspout leader. What is the minimum number of downspouts needed?

Michael,
I like your posts and work, but there may be room to improve in this sample question:
Specs typically describe quality and performance. You will NOT find number of downspouts in the specs. A better way to give out the question may be: discrepancies caused by the architectural and plumbing drawings calling out different number of downspouts.
