what type of welding should be used to connect one piece of metal that got snapped in the middle?

  Do you have a diagram?  Architects need to be able to read weld diagrams, but we won't be designing them.

  I think it can be some version of a groove weld. Search for pics/graphics of groove weld types to see.

  A: Butt weld

  First, each edge of the broken piece likely needs to be ground down at an angle. See here. And here.
