ARE questions and IBC/NFPA/ADA/CSI sections
Using Black Spectacles and Ballast practice exams, I come across questions about which sections of the various various codes and standards would relate to a particular subject matter. I have also had a few where I would be required to know for example, based on construction type and occupancy, how many accessible units would be required given the total number in the building. It would seem to me that this would require memorizing a whole table of information...
Just trying to set expectations - I'm wondering how much time I should spend knowing which sections are which in such a case, for non-case study questions that don't provide reference material.
Thanks!

Hi Andrew,
On the ARE you will be given the applicable code section, typically part of the IBC or similar on the case studies if you need them. I think you definitely need code knowledge for the exam though.
I highly recommend reading ch 3 - 6 of the IBC for PPD. It's not easy reading, but I think it will be worth the effort. You need to know the Use Groups, Types of Construction, and be well versed in ch 5 Building Height and Area charts. Reading those chapters in their entirety will give you a broad overview of the code. There are tons of 'exceptions' to each rule it seems, so understanding the overall of when and why there are exceptions will also be helpful.
Keep studying and good luck!
