I cannot speak to Amber book method as a whole, but here is what I have done.
I read AHPP basically cover-to-cover and then scheduled my 3 pro-practice exams within a month.  I took PcM on 11/15 and passed.  Continued to study for PjM, but thanks to a generous xmas gift from my mom, signed up for Amber book with the Cyber Monday deal on 11/29.  I started the pro-practice section immediately, but honestly didn't have to pay too much attention since I was very familiar with most of the material at that point... it was a great refresher and I definitely learned a few extra things.  The practice exam and flashcards were very helpful.  I took my PjM test as scheduled on 12/4 and passed.  I then went all the way through Codes and Site to prepare for CE.  I again used the practice exam and flash cards.  I passed CE yesterday on 12/13.  My goal for the rest of the month is to go through the Systems and Construction modules before scheduling my technical exams.  I'm not completely sold on the idea of scheduling those as close together as possible, but I'm working on setting a strategy soon so I can go ahead and schedule the rest of my exams.

So, this was my long way of saying, you can do Amber Book and make it work for you.  If you have studied pro-practice and would feel more comfortable finishing those exams first, skip to the sections listed in the panic guide first.  Good Luck!
