1st Exam Failed - Need Advice
Hi,
I took my first exam, Practice Management a couple weeks ago after studying 6.5 months (around 30-45 min weekday mornings before work) and after great technical difficulties taking an online proctored exam and then finally going into a Prometric Testing Center. I thought I knew the material pretty well finishing the 3 hr + test in about an hour and a half yet I didn't do any of the calcs questions figuring I could still pass without doing them. I am ready to move forward and debating whether to move on to Project Management or to double back and restudy Practice Management. What do you all advise? and what study materials do your recommend. I studied the Arch Handbook of Prof Practice, AIA contracts, Ballast Exam Review, Mock Exam and Practice Questions using the ARE 5.0 handbook as a basic guideline starting point but obviously I need more in depth studying. Any recommendations. I am determined to pass and get my license. Thanks in advance and good luck to you all too.

I see you said you finished with plenty of time left, but did not do the calculation questions. I must advise you at what a poor idea that was. Each question is only worth one point, but trying to solve a question gives you a better chance than guessing...
Project Management is an "easier" exam than practice management in my opinion - because practice is very much calculations and legal procedures, while project management is about the drawings and the relationships of who, what, where, and why. Practice management is A LOT for the average young professional to learn, being as the average young professional has not run their own practice. Whereas, the average young professional may have had some experience running projects. They do overlap, however. In terms of staffing, and contract documents.
The AHPP is THE BEST REFERENCE for Practice Management. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND a book called THE BUSINESS OF DESIGN which really breaks down practice management in easy to understand terms - and it is a quick read!
I always recommend practice exams and testing yourself on what you think you have learned based on other people's perspectives. I also always recommend study groups, which you can find in the NCARB Forum community.
Best wishes,
