Case Study Document Strategy
One of the major changes from locking questions upon taking a break is it changes the strategy around using the Case Study documents as reference for other questions. My technique has previously been to start the exam by checking and noting any case study docs that may be useful and then marking question numbers that may be applicable to them on my scratch paper and review with any time remaining when I had finished. Normally I take the break in between answering the first set of questions and starting on the case studies, so this strategy would be problematic with the new format.
Originally my thought was to completely finish the case study questions first and then have access to the documents when doing the other questions, but based on the demonstration exam it appears that not only do questions you've viewed lock after a break but they are completely inaccessible to viewing again after the break. So that would mean with this technique you wouldn't be able to access the documents after taking your first break.
Which leads me to the potential strategy of viewing and answering only the first question of each case study when beginning the exam, then using the docs as needed for the normal questions. Then if I take a break I would answer the second question of each case study to again have access to the docs and etc depending on how many breaks I take.
It would take a bit of extra time needing to reread the case study setup after each break to properly answer the question, but I think its the best way to get around the locking questions. Has anyone else put any thought into this and come up with anything better?
Can anyone from NCARB confirm that the case studies won't lock as a block and only questions you've viewed will lock?

Hi Joshua,
I can confirm that your strategy would work. Here is an example:
- You open only the first item of each case study prior to a break (make sure to also answer these items). This will allow you to view all case study resources through the items.
- When you return from a break, only the first item of each case study is locked (the item you previously opened). You can still open all other case study items and see the resources.
The demo exam functions exactly like the actual exam, so if you try out this strategy (using the break buttons) on the demo, it will function as described.
