Brick in Seismic regions

In Building Construction Illustrated, there's a brick veneer section in Chapter 7: Moisture and Thermal Protection. It shows steel shelf angles which are used in mid to high rise brick veneer buildings. In Architectural Graphic Standards there's more brick sections in the Exterior Vertical Enclosures chapter. The steel shelf angles carry the veneer loads, usually at every other horizontal diaphragm or each one if there's high enough seismic activity. These spots with steel angles also act as horizontal expansion joints with compressible filler, also good for lateral loads. Masonry ties are used but their primary purpose is to accommodate the differential movement between the brick veneer and backup wall.

Many thanks Isabelle.  I will look into these references more closely.  All the best.

    Good morning,

I am reviewing these sections but still confused when I read the FEMA 454 Design for earthquake, where they mention that non structural building elements should not be attached to the bearing walls. So which anchors should be used in this consideration?

    Thank you.
