I am looking at FEMA and IBC for masonry construction, but found even more confused after this.. any help would be appreciated.
I understand that normally when talking about masonry, we turn to metal tie or anchor or grout etc. which means that we want to rigidly fasten the masonry back to the structure. Maybe this is just my assumption after learning these details at work. However, I noticed that IBC refers back to MSJC saying that the masonry construction should be totally isolated from the structure if they are not load bearing.
My question is, does the brick/cmu not need any connections to the structure or slabs under this situiation? It seems goes to the opposite compared to my previous project and they were not load bearing. And how this connected/non-connected relates to seismic design? I assume in seismic design, all masonry work want to somehow tie to something? Thanks a lot!
