PcM - PjM: "Design Phases" in a Traditional Project Delivery
When reviewing the 5 phases (SD, DD, CD, Bidding, CA) of a Design-Bid-Build Project Delivery type, I keep getting caught up on what are considered the " Design Phases". Is the SD and DD phase considered the "Design Phases" because of high level design occurring during these stages of a project? Or does this group also include the CD phase due to detail development / design happening primarily during this phase?
Also, even though Pre-design services are considered an Additional Service, per AIA Contracts, if this was included as part of the Project Schedule, would this phase fall under the "Design Phases". I haven't came across any material that gives me a black and white answer for this so I am hoping that someone here can give me some insight!

Based on my experience with studying and test taking I would recommend you take each phase at face value. Anything with “design” in the title is a design phase. Obviously you never stop designing for the entire length of the project but at some point the contracts have to make a delineation from design to production and construction administration. Try not to over think it and you will be fine.

Does that leave the Pre-design phase out of the "Design Phases"? How I am thinking of it is if the Pre-design phase is included in a Project schedule, with no additional information other then it being on a schedule, this leads me to believe that this phase was added into the scope of the Architect, which then circles back to the first question on if this phase is part of the "Design Phases"
I am looking at it this way, because if pre-design was not in the Architect's scope then why would a Project schedule include this phase even though the Pre-design phase shouldv'e been completed before an Architect was brought onto a project in a traditional project delivery?
