How to Study Thermal Insulation, flashing details, etc?
How do you guys successfully study flashing details? Right now I'm going over BCI and I'm not sure I understand it 100%. Do you guys sketch section walls for the different construction methods? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Study Building Construction Illustrated and consult Building Science Corporation. They are a great resource for all things insulation, flashing, siding, etc.

You should know the major categories of insulation, like rigid insulation and Batt insulation, etc.
You should also know the relationships of the thickness of the insulation and the framing member size, i.e., you cannot put R-30 insulation inside a 2x6 wall. The ARE exam questions should have all the information there, you just need to know what to look for.

I do not know how thick R-30 would be but it sounds thick enough. Not sure if there Is a rule of thumb to figure out the thickness of the insulation by R value?
Where can I find information about relationship between the thickness of the insulation and framing member size?
On another note, in the illustration below from Fundamentals of Building Construction the flashing is shown installed all around the window opening including jamb sides. Why than do we not normally show flashing @ jamb on window details - at least I have not seen?
