Study question: Soffit and eave vents
Are soffit vents required when the eaves are already vented? If so, where should they be located?
To the best of my knowledge, I don't believe you need both soffit and eave vents. Is this assumption correct?

I believe you are correct. You don't need both eave and soffit vents. You do need to abide by 2012 IBC 1203.2 Attic spaces, or whichever statute/code the jurisdiction you're designing in utilizes. I recommend reading the 2012 IBC 1203.2, because one of the exceptions relates to how having both soffit/eave + ridge ventilation cuts your total ventilation requirements in half from 1/150 to 1/300.

At a philosophical level, yes they both achieve the same end goal. They are however installed in distinctly different areas thus lending their different names of eave and soffit.
