Structures - Live Load

Hi, this is from an old NCARB structures practice exam. I know the answer is 2.5 however can't remember why.. any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I know this thread is a few months old, but I'm wondering the same thing. The question is from the NCARB 4.0 Structural Systems exam guide.
In Ballast I can't find an example problem quite like this but in one Ballast example of wind loading, the total wind load on the building is added together and then divided by the number of walls (2, in Ballast's case). So I would potentially expect the total shear, 5K, as Wendy said, to be divided by 3 (columns). But that's not the given answer. (5/3 does not equal 2.5) Anyone else have insights on this? This also ignores the given dimensions but I think we can do that for shear...

This was not a good question unless you study structures. This is an indeterminate structure and not a simple analysis to solve it.. The following web page gives you your answer.
