Schematic Design Vs. Preliminary Design - What is the differences?

Hello,

 

I am alittle bit confused between schematic design and preliminary design, is it the same? if not what are the differences?

  I view these like this:

   

  Think of the preliminary design as a quick napkin sketch.

  the SD develops the preliminary design further and is typically the first phase that is billed to Owner. Includes to some degree basic plan, elevation sections, and identifies major systems to be contemplated in the building.  B101 will define SD well and references preliminary design within this section of the contract.
