    Hi Dimiana,

i have just taken PCm and failed for the second time, coming across questions that were not in any study material. Furthermore I reached out to NCARB multiple times to come to this answer from a  NCARB member that we are tested on material that is NOT in the study guide but also things that would take place in real life. The questions I had trouble with though were not questions anyone in architecture would have unless they had well over ten years experience in a firm or are a principal of some sort or PM or accountant.

Then even further, the respondent of NCARB is a financial advisor for another company. This puts a situation where we have NON Architects writing test exam questions about accounting. This brings me to the conclusion that we are being tested on a thorough understanding of accounting within architecture.

I would focus on accounting and look through the forums for accounting based studies. Although we do have some practice questions in the study materials it is NOT sufficient for the exam. I am guessing since i failed two times the questions are pulled from a more random selection than if you would pass the first time. Be sure to cover all the materials people have listed and more, because as the NCARB member stated, "Please advise that the ARE exam is a professional exam, meaning that the exam is comprised not only of material that can be learned and reviewed in text book format, but also of applied knowledge by working in the field of architecture. Given this information, there may be  some exam coverage area that may not be able to be located in any study material, but would be learned by working in the field."

Hoping that will help you and others who continuously search for answers when in fact there are none. Thanks NCARB!

If you look at my post a few discussions down I made an excel spreadsheet listing the most common NCARB recommended and 3rd party sources for this test.

In terms of time, it depends on how fast you read and how many times you need to go over things to not just remember but truly understand them. I would estimate at least 40-60 hours, with that spread out over however much time you have. At least from my experience, almost everything on the test could be answered from AHPP or the AIA contracts, code of ethics, and NCARB code of conduct. 3rd party materials are really just there to help explain what you're reading and give you other viewpoints. No one source will provide you everything you need to know to pass.

If you don't have a ton of work experience, using 3rd party materials where they explain real-world examples are quite useful, such as Young Architect Academy, Schiff Hardin Lectures, Hyperfine tests/ practice questions, etc.

    Good luck!
