I would also add that if a question did say 5,000 sf, 4 story building - I’d be thinking okay great the building is 5,000 sf I don’t care how many floors it is. The 4 story part would be a distraction. Now of course if it said 4 story building 5,000 sf per floor then I’d tackle the questions as a 20,000 sf building.

    Hello Austin,

This is just something that comes out of my mind when I see your question. If you are given 5,000 sq.ft. building you should probably assume its the building Sq footage and use it to calculate the energy cost. But if you are given 5,000 sq. ft. per floor you should multiply the number of floors to the Sqft number. I am not sure if this is what you are asking hope someone else could explain much better.

^^^Just to add, I would agree with above as well.  The ARE questions should tell you if the SF given is per floor or not.  Be on the lookout for things like that so you don't forget to take into account the # of floors if the SF per floor is given (like you've rightfully already picked up on).

Thank you David!  And Arthur you make a very good point.  I'll make sure I keep this in mind when I take the exam.  Thank you so much!
