Allowable Area per IBC 2015

    My understanding is that it is per floor, but some of the calculations for increasing area modifications (like equation 5-2 in IBC 2015) take into account the number of stories within the calculation, so the A(a) derived using those equations is for the entire building.

    Hang on man. If it’s 5-2, I get it because it multiplied by a max of 3 stories. But 5-3 doesn’t have any story multipliers in the equation?

    Ahh, you're right. In BCI (2018) p. 92 he gives a diagram explaining why it's not included. For mixed occupancies, you have to comply with each separate area's requirements on their own. So therefore each story must comply individually, and the A(a) can be calculated using equation 5-3.

    actually the code states that its "allowable building area". so not "allowable building area per storey".
