Occupancy Group

There are two key factors here, one of which you haven't mentioned above: age of children being cared for and self-preservation.

A Group E Occupancy can be the following:

    • More than 5 kids that are over 2-1/2 years of age
    • Between 5 and 100 kids that are less than 2-1/2 years of age, provided that all the day care rooms are at the level of exit discharge, and each one of those rooms has an exterior door.

The thing here is that in the event of an emergency, all these kids need to be able to get out of the building.  In the first criteria, over 2-1/2 years of age, Code says those kids are capable of self-preservation.  They can get out on their own (albeit with a teacher keeping them in single file line like the old school days!).  In the second criteria, kids that are less than 2-1/2 years of age are NOT capable of self-preservation, BUT because there is a limited number of them AND they have doors from their classrooms that go directly outside, Code identifies this as safe.  The staff/teachers would be able to use those doors and quickly get the kids out of the rooms, particularly babies in cribs that are on wheels (which is why these rooms need to be at the level of exit discharge.)

An I-4 Use Group is for those who need some physical assistance or are incapable of self-preservation - meaning, someone needs to physically help them get out of the building.  In the instance of a Day Care, this would apply to when you have an occupant load of kids exceeding 100 where those kids are less than 2-1/2 years of age, OR it would apply to a situation where the day care/classrooms are NOT on the level of exit discharge.  Meaning, either of the two criteria identified above for Group E do not apply.

Self-preservation is really the key here.  Hope this helps!
