ADA RAMP
AnsweredHello All,
I have a quick question about calculating ramp lengths. Are the top and bottom landings supposed to be included to the overall ramp length? For example, If I have a ramp that is 45" in height, we would need 50' (due to a landing after 30'). But would 60' be accurate because we incorporate the top and bottom landing? Is this stated in ADA?
Thank you!

Yes, 60' is correct. Each ramp run needs a 5' landing at the top and bottom.
So a 45' ramp with a 1:12 slope is made of the following pieces:
5' + 30' + 5' + 15' + 5' = 60'
Here is a link to the ramp section of the ADA accessibility design standards:

Good Luck!

Hey Tasanee,
Good question! On the ARE, the question will tell you whether to include the landings or just calculate ramp length. Sample Item 10 in the PDD section of the ARE 5.0 Handbook is a great example of a ramp calculation item.
