unprotected building elements
Hello,
According to IBC, Type II-B construction allows unprotected noncombustible building elements. What does "unprotected" mean here? If fireproofing spray is applied to a beam, does that mean the beam is protected? Can you give me some examples of the projection method?
Thank you!

Yes, "unprotected" means that there is no fire rated assembly that provides any rating to that structural element. You look around a IIB building, you see fully exposed steel columns and floor structure above - no fireproof spray, no fire-rated gypsum board assemblies wrapping the columns. In the event of a fire, that structure is "unprotected."
When you said "projection method" did you mean to say "protection method?" If so, protection would be achieved by either fireproof spray or like I mention above, encapsulating the structure in some fire-rated, UL-tested wall assembly.
