    Is there more to this problem? Without seeing the whole right side of the equation I would have solved for R like this: L = 0 = (12k*6') + (18k*9') + (18k*12') - (R*18')

    When solving reactions the uniform load would be counted as the full weight at midspan, pretty sure. So you need to add the two point loads, the uniform load acting at mispan and then subtract the reaction on the right side so everything equals zero. But I am confident you will not have to solve for actual reactions on the exam, just understand how different loads might affect a beam.

    Emily, I agree with your perspective. I got a little messed up when I followed up doing a Shear and Moment diagram for that left side problem. I just relooked at it and realized I was counting my uniform load twice (As a mid span load AND constantly sloped load.) never mind. hahahaha. Gotta be able to laugh at your silly mistakes.

    Emily, I'm getting all the same L & R reactions as you got. I think you had this all correct. The method that Ben submitted is how I work in this instance and it all worked out. Maybe doing them again fresh? Hope it clears up.
