    Hi Kati,

If you are having trouble with a text book study regimen you may be more suited to an audio/video learning modality. You are asking the right questions at this stage. You may have greater success with online video tutorials which numerous users on this forum have benefited from as well.

If you are referring to their private tutoring, don't. You'd be better off spending less than half the money taking a trusted advisor and colleague out to lunch to discuss topics you are having trouble understanding. Why pay $400 an hour to have someone who doesn't know you discuss "strategizing & question-asking". You get that for free right here on this forum and in your office.

Each provider of materials has a slightly different focus. Some examples (including mine) below:

Black Spectacles, (the video study series) focused on understanding sweeping concepts relating specifically to ARE test specifications: www.blackspectacles.com

Pluralsight, (I'm the author of this one) primarily based on core and most-commonly-encountered concepts of the exam, and advice for study efficiency: http://www.pluralsight.com

Architect Exam Prep, a whole-package delivery of knowledge typical of the exam content: http://www.architectexamprep.com

Read through the forums where people do mind-dumps after their exams to describe which ones worked best for them.

    Happy studying!

Hi, Kati. I don't have any experience with their private tutoring, but I just took PPD and PDD this week and I used their video courses and mock exams as part of my study strategy. I found them very useful, especially after trudging through those same sections of the Ballast book.

If you've spent some time in the study books, maybe look at Black Spectacles or some of the others who offer mock exams to see where you might be short on knowledge and to get a feel for the 5.0 experience. Then use that to focus your studies on weak spots.

Video lectures are definitely a nice departure from dense blocks of text and I think I learned more at a faster pace.

Thanks, everyone, for your input! I was actually looking at the Black Spectacles’ coaching program (not their tutoring program). My guess is that it’s comparable to the Young Architect’s ARE boot camp. After speaking with Black Specs directly and reading your posts I’ve decided to not do it. It sounds like it’s a fairly new program and if others could pass without it, so can I (I hope)! Thanks for the links. Pluralsight looks like it has some great resources. I’ll have to check out the free black specs videos and the 10 day free trial of pluralsight and go from there. Thanks again!

All of these are good resources, I believe. As has been pointed out, however, 'good' is only 'good' for you if it is helpful in focusing your study on what you need to learn AND on how you best learn.  I suggest the ARE Bootcamp as an excellent aid in helping you understand what (and how) you need to benefit from these resources mentioned as well as many, many others.

For anyone reading this now....don't do it...run the opposite direction. It was the biggest waste of money I ever had.
The mentor/coach didn't even bother showing up and recording 3 separate Google hangouts. (2 google hangouts per division). I started passing when I started investing other materials available. I can't for the life of me figure out why the AIA is pushing such an expensive subpar product. I love the Ballast Quiz bank, Hyperfine word problems and the AEPrep Audio files of their study guides!
