(July 31, 2025 @ 6pm ET) 40 Minutes of Competence Study Session: ARE Math for Dummies - Structures
This week's Amber Book : 40 Minutes of Competence program is titled, “ARE Math for Dummies: Structures”
Relevant Exam Division: Project Development & Documentation (PDD)
This session is meant to be a helpful refresher for those of you who've not done any kind of structural problems recently, or if you're the type of person who's always struggled through their structures courses as a university student. We'll clarify fundamental structural concepts and terminology to help you feel more confident when you see them on the exams. We won't go into anything complex. Think of this as a condensed tutoring session covering basic structural concepts in under an hour.
These study sessions are free and open to all, not just Amber Book subscribers, so join us this Thursday at 6pm ET: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83922907346
You’ll take the first five minutes of class to answer this week's question alone, but if you would like to get a head-start on that, here is the assignment:
A floor has a load of 60 pounds/sf. The simply supported beams that carry the floor span 32 ft and sit 12 ft on center.
What is the maximum vertical shear, measured in kips, in each beam? Round to the nearest whole number.
A) 40
B) 8
C) 12
D) 15
