How to handle eager contractor doing additional work before additional work proposal accepted by owner
Any guidance on how to handle this scenario as the architect:
- Should the architect disapprove and ask to tear down work, since the work is not approved yet (even tho architect knows the owner is interested in accepting the proposal). Feels like tearing down only to have to redo is a total waste of time and money.
- Or should the architect not ask the ctr to tear down but bring it to Owner's attention as he knows the owner wants it, but just has not approved it yet. But this feels like going against the strict guidance of AIA contracts to reject non-approved work done without a proper change order.

Per A201 7.1, changes in the work are only approved by change order, CCD, or minor change in the work.
Architect has the right to reject the work as non-conforming due to the agreement not being made yet and the contractor went ahead of the owner and architect in carrying out non-conforming work. The architect can also flag it to the owner as non-conforming and the owner can accept it.
Whether it is approved or not, it is the contractor's responsibility to bear the risks, costs, and time associated with completing the work or potentially removing it, as they advanced without approval of the work.
