Total snow load per linear foot?

The snow load is a vertical load that is supported by the ridge beam and both walls on either end. Since this is a vertical load (gravitational), we need to consider the linear dimension, 20 feet. However, we can not multiply snow loads per foot by the total length of 20 feet because the ridge beam is not doing this job on its own. It shares it with the walls on the sides. So, only half of the length (10 feet) is the linear dimension that the ridge beam is responsible for, which means it is 5 feet from each side (5'+5'=10 feet). The walls support the other 5 feet on both sides. So that is why the answer is 10 feet x 60 lbs. This concept is called the tributary area, which means the vertical loads are assumed to be distributed between structural members. We typically consider the midway (dimension) between two structural members to calculate the tributary area.
