You can start with the case studies. If you do, you'll be able to refer back to them for review or checking answers during your exam session. The only exception is if you take a break during the exam, in which case all questions you've seen/opened up to that point, answered or unanswered, will be locked and made inaccessible upon leaving for your break and returning to complete your exam.

I read that a strategy is to open the first case study question and answer it, then move on to the regular questions so that you can take a break mid-test without losing access to the case study materials later on. Can someone confirm if that is true? Or is the whole case study locked after a break, despite only viewing/answering one question?

I’m not sure if this is even worth answering?

nicolemckernan I wouldn't risk losing access to the entire case study in doing that. you can check for yourself if it works with the practice exams, but I find the best method is to do the exam in one continuous sitting

nicolemckernan, You are correct and this strategy would work. This is confirmed by a live Q&A session that NCARB did regarding the break policy when it first debuted. If you see all questions in a single case study, then all the seen questions will be locked after a break. However, if you leave one or more questions unseen in the particular case study, then those unseen questions (and related references) will still be accessible after a break. This is because the references are still tied to the unseen questions.
