Capping contaminated soil

I had a recent question about the same topic. The site was fairly large and contamination was from varying depths on the site from as shallow as 5 feet to as deep as 10 ft. If time is of the essence, even if the contamination is deep, it is said that excavation and off-site treatment is best option, though this seems extreme for such a large site. Depends on the project and so many other factors.

    1. No you can't build a permanent building on a capped site.

    2. Soil capping can be effective at any contamination depth, but as a SOLE solution, it only really is in play when the contamination is shallower than 10'.

    3. Don't worry about cost unless the question lets you know that cost is an issue. Offsite soil washing is the only fast option that allows you to build on top of the contamination, but as you mentioned, it's expensive.

Thank you for the clarifications, Michael. One follow-up, if I may:

What can be built on a capped site? If not permanent structures, can things like parking lots, plazas, tennis courts, and/or playing fields be built over them?

    Thank you, Michael.

I’ve ordered your Amber Book from Amazon. Looking forward to receiving it. I will be taking the PA exam again (unfortunately failed the first try) and when I pass it next try, I’m planning on subscribing to your PDD and PPD courses. Though, to be honest, the prices are a bit steep, but I’m hoping they are worth it.

BTW, I like your comment that in order to pass the exams, “…you need to OWN the knowledge and subject matter…” I didn’t feel confident during my past PA exam and it showed in the result. I’ve come at the studying with a different mind set: Instead of trying to MEMORIZE copious facts and figures - which are important to a degree! - I am focusing more on taking practice test and questions and going so far as asking Chat GPT to generate all manner of questions related to PA, which really helps actually. I need to be able to synthesize what I know in terms of facts and figures in context with real-world situations, conditions and constraints!

Jason, know that Amber Book is a video course with 1300 animated videos, a companion workbook, 1000+ flash cards, 200 live action 40-minute videos, and 16 interactive practice exams.

What you ordered from Amazon is just the workbook…which is about 10% of the course, maybe 5%. If I had to do it again, I might not have called it Amber BOOK because of exactly this confusion. It’s hard to believe now, but 14 years ago, folks really didn’t trust online education (but still revered books).
