NCARB PA U-shape question
Does anyone know the U-shape building question in the NCARB practice exam? I think the open end of the U-shape should face south when there is southern wind? Why the answer is north?

Key to answering this question is to rule out possibilities. East and West can be ruled out as they are equals, and so not really possible to distinguish between those choices with the information given.
That leaves North and South as possibilities. Think about what differences are possible given the U and inverse U configurations.
The open end of the U should face north because this has the unique bonus of getting the shading from the bottom of the U shape cast over the courtyard for the longest time in the day, compared to if the open end were oriented in any other direction.
