Hi Tiffany. Thank you for posting, wishing you luck! I'm just wondering, did you wait until the end to do the case studies? Thanks!

(I'm currently studying for my first 5.0 exam which will be P&A, I've taken a few 4.0.)

Yes, I took the test in order, but if I had it to do over, I would have done the case studies first.

Thanks for the feedback! When you say you would have done the case studies first, would you say it would be easy to navigate through the exam to jump to the case studies? Or do you think this would waste time skipping through the exam and then having to go back. Thanks!

I've already taken CDS 4.0 and will be taking PPP 4.0 Wednesday. I'm debating whether to transition to 5.0 next and take this, Programming & Analysis or take one more (SPD) in 4.0. Has anyone else taken CDS and PPP in 4.0 and then transitioned? How did the transition go? Did you feel like there was an overlap in material between PPP 4.0 and P&A 5.0?

I just realized that case studies are always at the end (thus my question to you Tiffany not really making sense). If I understand correctly, all items are 1 point, so since the case studies take longer, then it is better to take them last anyway? Just trying to figure out strategies. Christine I'm also struggling with figuring out what to study for P&A, having taken CDS, SD, PPP and SPD 4.0 (failed SPD vignette which would have allowed me to take one less 5.0 exam aaaarg!). I have all the Ballast, Kaplan, Archiflash material and want to spend any extra money on extra books judiciously). I'm thinking of just sticking to the old material and ADA and IBC. Or maybe I'll buy the Problem Seeking book since its less expensive than the Handbook one... Tiffany what did you use to study? Thoughts anyone? :)

    Daniel,

There's a button in the lower right corner of the screen that lets you go to a sort of "table of contents" to check on your flagged items. From there, you can click on any question in the test. NCARB has the practice exam online so you can see that feature.

    Christine,

I took PPP and CDS in 4.0, then transitioned to 5.0. I would recommend transitioning, the new test is fun with the new question types and you'll be one of the first 600 at this point. I didn't notice an overlap with PPP when I took P&A, but there are a few versions of each test, so maybe that will be different for you.

    Alejandra,

I used the Archiflash and read a few books from the library on Green building and watched a bunch of videos on YouTube that I found by searching "ARE SPD". I was originally studying for SPD, but then decided to transition. Good luck on your upcoming test!

    Hi Tiffany,

So based on some of your earlier comments, you thought that the 5.0 P&A related most to the SP&D of 4.0?  based on the criteria and outline I thought it seemed to relate directly to 4.0 PPP and was going to start studying based off PPP material?

Any suggestions of where to go for additional study material would be appreciated, thank you!

I did not take the test yet. I'm scheduled to take it next week. I'm working with Ballast and some of ARE Exam Prep Material from 4.0 that covers a lot of site work.

    Good luck Bruno!

Alejandra did you take the exam? I read you were confused about the location of the case studies. They are at the end and you can go to them directly by using the exam summary to navigate. It comes in handy.

Christine did you transitioned? I would highly recommend it.

Any general tips from anyone regarding what to focus on. I have read the test specifications a ton and noticed that with the resources suggested you almost have to do a ctl + F search for key words and read as you find them. There is not a how to locate your building guide step by step its more like a hybrid of concepts. Has anyone found anything else?

I took the test and I felt it was not enough time for case studies. There is a lot of material to read. I personally think it should be one comprehensive case study as the amount of reading is too much! Should I be tested on how fast I read or the information?! Most of us come from other countries and we do not read in English as fast as Americans. I am surprised nobody though about that. Those questions from case studies repeat too. If you are checking NCARB our understanding of the subject matter why testing us on speed reading?

5.0 is much better than 4.0 but one thing - why we need to wait 3 seconds for something to download? If you have problems with setting up the test flow you should give us more time. And really - in real world when you get a client - is that client testing you on how fast you answer or how well you answer NCARB?

I took P&A on 06/15/2017, and what I love about 5.0 is that I found out in less than 18 hours that I passed.

I studied a month and half for the test, and I felt like the test did not question more than half of the items/topics I studied.

TIME TIME TIME is a big issue with all of the 5.0 test, I have taken all except PPD and PDD. I have had only 2 or 3 minutes to spare for all of the test so far, I don't even bother marking questions to review anymore because I never have time to go back. I give each question my best effort then move on.

I usually enjoy the case study portions of the test (I'm a dork) but for my P&A test I felt like the questions were arbitrary and vague, I actually felt this way about the entire test.

I walked in feeling like I had prepared to the best of my ability, and walked out feeling defeated and frustrated.

I took several test in 4.0 and I often left feeling this way, 5.0 is a by far better of the two, but this test was least fav.

Hope this helps, good luck to us all!!!
