    Valentina,

The IBC excerpts resource varies by case study and division. Some divisions/cases will have this resource available and others will not. It really depends on the case study. A table of contents is provided within all IBC excerpts resources which is a quick way to see which code sections are included within an individual case study.

    Hopefully this helps.

Are there any examples available for case study questions to utilize while studying?

    Hi Maya,

I recommend clicking the the ARE 5.0 Demonstration Exam. The Demo contains 20 questions and 5 of those are case study items. This will also help you become familiar with the interface prior to taking the actual exam in the test center. You will see a link to the Demonstration Exam on the right side of your NCARB account.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Nick,

Thanks for your response.  Does that mean that there is no way to study for the case study questions without being online?  And there's no way to print out and review questions at our own pace?

The case study questions are a pretty major component of the new exams, it would be incredibly helpful it there were ways to study for them that didn't require being online, on a computer, flipping from page to page.  I know that's the format of the exam, but the ARE 5.0 Handbook is a great example of providing material that can be studied and reviewed for format and content, not just used as an example.  Personally, I study best when I can print out the questions, any supporting material, and review all of that information, along with the correct answers in order to understand how everything fits together.   Please let me know if there's any way to do this for the case study questions .
    Thanks

    Hi Maya,

Thank you so much for your feedback!  We really appreciate it.  You are correct, the sample case study can only be practiced on the ARE 5.0 Demonstration Exam.  The reason we have done this is so candidates can practice using the case study interface and become familiar with how to navigate the various resources contained within a case study.  Each division contains different case studies and resources, so I would recommend not focusing on the sample case study resources, but rather how to effectively navigate them and answer a question.  This will help you tremendously in the test center since the actual exam uses the same exam delivery software as the Demonstration Exam.  I hope this helps!

    Hi Nick,

Thanks for your feedback, I understand the thought process behind the demonstration exam, but the fact that the case study questions are not included in the handbook, or any other format is a serious detriment to those trying to prepare for the ARE 5.0.  Please consider providing the case study questions in a downloadable format as well.

    Thank you

It would also be helpful to have a general idea of what is being tested on each of these case studies - the demonstration exam is far too general to really have an expectation geared towards each division.

The case study questions can pull from any of five PDD content sections in the handbook. There are no real case-study questions to study from. The entire point is to understand the interface and navigating between whatever documentation is provided. The nice thing with the case-studies is that the answer is contained in the documentation the majority of the time. You need to be comfortable with the search function, panning/zooming, moving between documents. If you want to study, get familiar with Chapters 5, 6 & 10 from the IBC and A117.1-2009 so the exam isn't the first time you're looking at this material.

nick. can you help me and some others out here please?

i don't understand this answer. there are two case studies in PDD.

there is also a very specific list of "resources" in the exam guide that contains AISC tables, engineering type equations and one table from IBC.

then there is the ncarb video showing the case study format which very clearly shows IBC chapters 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 as a resource for a case study.

    > are the "resources" strictly related to multiple choice questions?

    > or is there a relationship between the "resources" listed in the exam guide and what is provided for reference in the case studies?

    > is it possible or probable that the five chapters from IBC are resources for case studies in PDD (or PPD)?

    > is there /any/ information provided about what material will be shown in the case studies so testers can review it prior to the exam? the ncarb vid shows about 139 pages of information in the case study and it would be helpful to have a handle on what this would be prior to testing in PPD or PDD.

i can't seem to find this answer in any of the material provided or i wouldn't bother you...

    THANKS

    Hey Jonathan,

I will try to provide some clarity for you. All divisions, regardless of content, contain a "References" tab at the top of the testing interface. This document is always the same. This is totally separate from the case study resources. The references can be used on discrete or case study items on an exam. You might find that you don't need to reference this document at all on your exam, but it is always available.

Case study resources are different. They should only be used for the case study questions on your exam. The case study resources within a division are based on the content of that division (broken down into sections and objectives in the Handbook). For example, the case studies on Project Management might contain contracts, staffing information, a project schedule, or similar resources that are applicable to Project Management. The Project Development and Documentation division might have drawings, codes, specifications, or other documents that align with the content of PDD.

We do not publish what case study resources you will see on your exam, but know that they will align with the content of the division they are associated with. You won't know the answer to this until you are taking your exam. My advice to you is to be familiar with the navigation tools within the case study interface so regardless of what resources you are provided, you will be ready to utilize them to answer the case study questions.

Two years later and I agree with the other commenters who were requesting exam-specific practice material for case studies. After taking PPD in 5.0, I felt quite unprepared although I had been through the demonstration exam. More practice exam study material in general is needed, but specifically for case studies. A format that can be downloaded and printed or a published version is needed.
