PPD Practice Exam - Area Drain vs Perforated Piping

  • The area drain is usually connected to a stormwater pipe, this will require some excavation and possible regrading to direct water to the drain; however, the subsurface perforated piping is not necessarily going to the stormwater system and instead it is just preventing ponding by forcing a quicker flow into the subsoil.

Another thought here is that an area drain will have a grate, which could be problematic for children running around on a playground.  In this instance, the subservice pipe carries water while not causing any tripping hazards

The question says "open grass area" - an area drain is for surface runoff so it requires a non-permeable surface pitched towards the grate inlet.
