Beam and Slab Spans

    You do not need to memorize all the spans but do need to know when to use each type of structural member and when. For example, if you need to worry about floor to floor space and are locked in how high the building can go then you may want to use a system that lowers your overall floor to floor height such as concrete compared to steel joists.

    🤞 thinking the exam is about logically making selections on structural systems, so a broad understanding of their characteristics will help picking the right one under the application scenario. Below are what I encountered --

    for mechanical systems and structural system integration: Wood Trusses or Open-Web Joist

    for long span (>60'): Glulam Beam, Long-Span Open-Web Joist (LH, DLH), Steel Rigid Frame

    for short span: perhaps Wood I-Joist, Timber Truss (Heavy Timber Frame, in general), Steel Girder are most appropriate

    for Max floor height: concrete flat slab with column + capital and drop panels
