    Hi Mary,

So there are couple question here to respond to.  First, for-profit test prep companies have not been given more information then the average test taker, because NCARB has given ALL of our information to both groups.  We really believe that the ARE 5.0 Handbook provides you a ton of information to prepare for the exam.  It also gives for-profit test prep companies a ton of information to develop their own practice problems and study material.

Back in March, all for-profit companies that we were aware of were invited to our office for a two-day workshop.  We walked them through the various content areas in each division and they had a chance to ask us questions.  You, through this community, have the same opportunities now also.  Here is a list of the companies that attended:

I want to encourage you to consider your studying for ARE 5.0 not based on the amount of study material floating around, but by the material you already know.  Focus on the content in each division, not the item types or specific practice questions.  Use the Handbook and determine the areas you fully understand already vs. the areas you may need to do some additional studying or experience.

Last thing, you stated: "I know some companies vetted the 4.0 by having employees set for the exams."  If you are aware of this first hand, please contact NCARB as this is illegal and a breach of confidentiality agreements by those who sat for an exam with the intent of sharing that information with others..  Quite simply, it is cheating and not fair to you or others as a candidates.

Ryan, 5.0 handbook does not reference resources used in 4.0 such as Ballast & Kaplan divisions BDCS, SS, SD and BS. Is this a simple way of not confusing the new exam from the previous exam? I believe that many candidates like myself transitioning in Nov (that have followed the credit model) are relying on studying these specific divisions we already have. Just wondering why these important resources are not referenced in the handbook.

    Thanks

    Hi Ryan,

I have no knowledge of any company sharing exam information. What I was getting at, though, is often on 4.0, how the question was asked was just as important as the info in the question. I think many of us are asking for more examples because 4.0 was often more of a reading comprehension exam than a knowledge based one. For example, and I am making this up on the spot, "if it starts raining on a job site do you A) use an umbrella B) get in your car to leave C) seek shelter D) go in the construction trailer
Choose the best answer, which would be C because the other choices are some form of seeking shelter.

I had to study how to approach the questions on 4.0 because the question types were tricky.

    Michael,

The ARE 5.0 Handbook does not list any for-profit test prep companies because those are not resources our item writers use to develop items in each division.  (The same is true in ARE 4.0.)  You can certainly use the sources that you mentioned to study, but many of them are just collections of items they created on their own.  If you use ARE 4.0 resources to prepare for an ARE 5.0 division, start by going through each objective in a division.  If there is an objective you do not understand, go find that in an ARE 4.0 resource to study.

I do not recommend studying all of the ARE 4.0 resources for an ARE 5.0 division.  For example, if you are preparing for ARE 5.0 Project Development & Documentation, it is probably not the best use of your time to study all of the ARE 4.0 resources for CDS, BDCS, SS, and BS.  Really use the ARE 5.0 Handbook to guide your studies.

    Mary,

ARE 5.0 will be using Multiple Choice (MC), Check-All-That-Apply (CATA), and Quantitative-Fill-In-the-Blank (QFIB) item types -- just as we did on ARE 4.0.  The new item types are HotSpots and Drag-and-Place.  Hopefully the ARE 5.0 Handbook provides you with plenty of examples on how the question may be asked.  Reading comprehension is part of the assessment, because you must be able to identify the appropriate pieces of information in an item and determine the correct answer - just as you do on architectural projects.

Thanks Ryan. I certainly understand that disseminating information from clients is important, but I was hoping that the multiple choice questions would be more clear cut.

It's interesting that Funkaar did not attend as I have paid $2500 for their prep courses.

    Denise,

Did you use Funkaar?  I'd like to know what your take is on them.
