My guess is that you are selecting the louvers that would not block the sunlight into the space based on their angle. The louvers that are shown here block the light to provide glare control, and the louvers that are leftover in the key let the direct sunlight through.

    Hi Chris,

See the hatch marks on the louvres?  The ones going \\\\ would not block the summer sun.  The ones going //// would block the summer sun.  (The sun is high in the summer mid-day).

Your clue that you need the interior light shelf is the statement saying they want "indirect daylight".  The light shelf will bounce light towards the ceiling, providing indirect light in the space.

This topic is covered in Sun, Wind & Light with diagrams.

    Hope this helps!

I don't see what's wrong in your solution...

Concur w/ the "hatch direction" response!

This all makes sense but I am very frustrated because on another question, this exact same logic and line of thinking didn't seem to matter and resulted in me getting an easy question wrong. I attempted to rotate the louvers on the east side so that they WOULD actually block out the sun, but it didn't allow me to rotate that direction. So I was unsure if they were looking at this as a realistic design or just a symbol of louvers and ended up selecting the vertical fins instead on this elevation. I find this happens a lot and it's just a different interpretation of the question, etc. and it is so frustrating!

It's extremely frustrating because although you know louvers are the answer, you don't know if NCARB is trying to trip you up with this minor detail!
