What is the best source to study exterior coating / paints / finishes in general?

The study materials I use divide this topic by materials, e.g. finishes on wood, concrete, roof... I have encountered this topic several times in mockup exams, wonder what the best way is to get the basics covered without having to remember dozens of finishes used in specific applications.
