PjM: Project Schedule Question
If the "Pre-design" or "Programming" is a phase in the architectural and design process that occurs/happens before the actual design work begins. It involves gathering information, conducting research, understanding the requirements, and establishing the project scope. Would you consider the pre-design or programming phase part of the design phases? Those are not part of the architect's Basic Services listed in the B101. However, if you have to evaluate a project schedule and in the question, they ask you to delay the design phases/productive time. Would you consider PD or programming as part of the delay if those services are in the project schedule chart?

No, I wouldn't because SD, DD, and CD are the design phases and the cost of the work gets updated at the end of each design phase per the B101. Nothing is designed in Programming and really the Client brings the Program to the Architect or per the B101 the Architect can do it but it is an Supplemental Service.

I had exactly this question twice asking about evaluating Dsign's phases schedule and I was not sure what to count as design phases. I was in doubt even for counting bid and CA as design as well, because I read in Ahpp that all those 5 phases (B101- Arch basic responsibilities) are design phases as Architect has a design role in them. Recently I studied an article introduced by Hyperfine that gave me my answer if the source was reliable. In this article, the author only counts SC-DD & CD as design phases as Blane explained too.
