Ballast Practice Question CE Case Study#2 - Occupancy Classification M/S-2
Hi! I am studying Ballast Practice Question, CE Case Study #2 and am confused about the occupancy classification of the stockroom in the grocery store. The problem states that the building is 45,000 ft2 sprinklered, Two thirds of the building is a retail space and the one-thirds houses the loading dock, making the stockroom 15,000 ft2. Based on IBC(my understanding of the code), wouldn't the stockroom be classified as S-2,Storage?
I've read through their explanation but am not clear why both the stockroom and the retail space is classified as M. Could anyone share some insights? Thanks!

hi dawn! I happen to be studying for the exam using this practice exam as well and thought I could help! You are right, the occupancy classification for the stockroom is S-2. Reading through eplanation #12 the last sentence also mentions it. If you look at the table on the next page, it's written on there as well. I'm not sure where you're seeing that they mentioned the stockroom being an occupancy M? Looking at question #14 as well and being that the answer is 1 hour would also indicate that the retail space and the stockroom are considered 2 different occupancy classifications per the table listed under resource 6.5

Hi Celina, thank you for replying:) I might be using a different version of the Ballast(Second Edition). My version of the ballast indicates there is no separation is required because the retail space and the stockroom have the same occupancy classification(Question #15). The table also indicates that the retail area and stockroom have M occupancy classification. However the last sentence on explanation for the question #13 regarding the sqft of the retail space says the stockroom is a Group S-2...
Possibly a mistake?
