Steel types and uses
I am in the final stretches of studying for PDD and am finding that I'm having a consistently hard time remembering all the different numeric designations for the steel types and uses. What is making this even harder is that every study resource I've been using only mentions a few of the designations and only mentions some characteristics or use indications so then putting all the different information sets has been challenging.
Example: ASTM A36 being listed as standard structural carbon steel while ASTM A992 is listed as the most common type for structural use. At the same time in practice questions within that same resource A36 is indicated as "no longer used for W-shapes" and there are references to other types of steel that were not listed anywhere. And the designations for steel bolts only add to the confusion of information...
What would be some strategies to effectively study this information without trying to memorize a long table of every single steel type out there but also not feel like I'm random-guessing each time I get one of the questions that asks which type would be best for X application or asks about some specific qualities of one type?
Many thanks in advance!

I would not stress out about this. I think understanding the difference between ASTM A36 and ASTM A992 will be enough for the exam. Know the basic shape designations too, like W and C, etc.
Hope this helps! And good luck with PDD!
